Is fear helpful or harmful?
"What would you do if you weren't afraid?"
As many of you know, I am an avid reader and somewhere in my readings I encountered that phrase and have often pondered its application in my own life when I am having to choose between a number of options. (It was an especially relevant concept when I was contemplating leaving the corporate world and opening a yoga studio!) And, as many folks begin to explore new territory with the advent of a new year, it's a good notion to think about.
Many of our actions are motivated by fear, and that's not always a bad thing. For example, fear of injury keeps us from running into traffic and fear of pain keeps us from placing a hand on a hot burner.
But does fear also put the brakes on the exploration of new activities that could be beneficial to us? Like going to your first yoga class? Or an asana (yoga pose) not yet tried because it looks too hard? Or a pose not attempted without the benefit of a familiar prop?
Yes, all too often, when it comes to trying new things, fear motivates us to avoid, stop, or simply remain in the proverbial shallow end of the pool.
One dictionary defines fear as "a distressing emotion aroused by impending danger, whether the threat is real or imagined." How true. But "impending" danger is not the reality of the present moment, and an "imagined" threat may never materialize.
Now I do not advocate throwing all caution to the wind and running willy-nilly into potentially harmful situations, but I do think there is value in sorting through our personal fears and determining whether those fears act as safe-guards that protect us from harm or roadblocks to a more vibrant future.
So whether you are considering taking a yoga class for the very first time, or pondering an advanced arm balance that you have been avoiding, ask fear to step aside so you can give it a try. You might be in for a very pleasant surprise.

Yoga University - Is It Right For You?
We were pleased to welcome a number of prospective Yoga University students at our recent open house.
If you missed the event, or are still not sure about your options for attending, or just questioning whether it is a good fit for you, then please contact me so we can discuss it personally. While attendance does constitute a commitment, it is a commitment to achieve a more informed yoga practice, a deeper understanding of all that yoga provides, and ultimately a mind-body-spirit connection that is healthier and more robust. Oh, and it will also open the door to teaching opportunities if that is your goal.
Yoga University may not be right for everyone, but it might be right for you. Please contact me with your questions, and visit our website to see what former students say.

Yoga for January
Last month I suggested that we use our yoga skills to "be still" and insert a moment or two of calm into the hectic holiday season. This month, when post-holiday deflation and cold winter weather sends us to our sofas and remote controls, I am going to suggest just the opposite. Move. That's right - just move. Although the temptation to remain sedentary may be strong when the skies turn dark early in the evening and the weather outside is "frightful", get up and move, even if just a little bit. Our bodies are engineered for motion, and that's what we should use them for. A couple of simple yoga poses will help. Urdhva Hastasana (upward salute, or raised hands pose), shown left, stretches the shoulders and stomach and helps improve digestion and relieve mild anxiety. And Uttanasana (standing forward bend) will keep the hamstrings flexible and strong and that's important for the health of our backs as well as our legs. While you're on your feet, strengthen the ankles, thighs and calves while stretching the shoulders and chest in Utkatasana (powerful pose).
All three poses can be done in a matter of minutes, require little or no propping, and deliver surprising benefits considering their simplicity and the ease with which they can done. What could be better than that!
