Frequently Asked Questions
Common Questions About Yoga
What are the basic benefits of Yoga?
Reduce muscular and joint pain
Gain flexibility and strength throughout the body
Improve balance and posture to maintain a healthy spine
Increase energy level
Find serenity and peace in the midst of the busyness of your life
What are Yoga Props?
Yoga props provide support, confidence, and relaxation. Props that may be used in class at our studio include the Yoga Wall, straps, blocks, blankets, and sandbags, all of which are provided for students by the studio at no charge when utilized. Some styles and teachers of yoga use yoga props often and others rarely use them. Props were originally created by B.K.S. Iyengar to assist students in practicing poses that they might not have been able to do otherwise.
Is Yoga compatible with my spiritual beliefs?
Yes, it is – no matter what you believe. Yoga is not a religion; it is a collection of techniques designed to develop health and well-being.
New to Sunrise
Do you have childcare?
Sunrise Yoga sometimes offers classes just for kids and for families. Unless you are attending one of those special classes, all other classes are for adults and young adults over 15. For children between the ages 12-15, please contact us: we are happy to talk about your child's situation and maturity. We do not have childcare available, and, due to space limitations and lack of supervision, children are unable to wait in the lobby during class sessions.
What Style of Yoga is Taught at sunrise?
At Sunrise Yoga, we teach Hatha Yoga, a term that means the physical type of yoga. Most yoga practiced in the West is Hatha Yoga. Within the Hatha style, there are numerous schools/styles of yoga. We teach a blend of styles of yoga so that each instructor has his/her own style. All of our classes include a focus on body alignment (sometimes with the assistance of props), breathing techniques, relaxation techniques, and meditation. We also include the yogic philosophy in our practice, incorporating ideas such as compassion, honesty, and non-harming into our teaching.
What do i need to know before my first class?
Do I need to pre-register?
Only if you want. You may register at your first class. Please arrive 10 minutes early so that you will have time to do this and not miss any part of class. Or, you may sign in for a class ahead of time here. The only exception is any Yoga Wall class and the Monday night Level 1: these classes are limited in size and we encourage you to sign up ahead of time for these.
What do i wear?
Wear something that’s comfortable but not baggy. Bare feet are essential. Our students often wear workout shorts or leggings; tank tops or T-shirts. Skin-tight clothing is definitely not necessary.
What do I bring?
The only things necessary for class are You and an open mind! The studio provides all props including a yoga sticky mat for you to use during class as part of your class fee. If you would like to bring your own props, you are welcome to do so. We have props available for purchase in the boutique if you would like to have your own.
What is the temperature in the studio?
We do not teach “hot” yoga. Our studio is heated/cooled to a temperature similar to your home.
Class Levels, Policies and Class Attendance
Can i come to a class to try it out?
If you wish to try a class at a time other than a class designated as a “Free Class”, you are welcome to attend any class that is appropriate to your yoga experience level. We strongly recommend the New Student Special of 30 days of unlimited yoga for only $30. We prefer that prospective students not come to watch a class as it can be disruptive for participating students. Private sessions are available for anyone who wants one-on-one instruction prior to joining a group session.
Can I start at Any Time?
Yes! Students are welcome to start classes at any time. Every session of the Level 1 Yoga, Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, All Levels, Restorative Yoga, and Back Care classes is appropriate for a brand-new student to attend.
Do I have to commit to a specific class day and time each week?
You are welcome to attend any classes that are appropriate to your yoga experience level. Because we understand that many of our students have fluctuating schedules, we offer a variety of class card options and a monthly unlimited membership, all of which can be used for any class (excluding “series” classes) offered at the studio. 6 and 12 class cards are valid 6 months from the first class taken with the card. When you purchase a 6 or 12 class card, you do not have to commit to a specific class and/or a specific day. Once you have used your 6 or 12 classes or the card expires, simply purchase a new card. Class cards and memberships can be conveniently tracked and purchased through our website.
How do i know which class is right for me?
Class descriptions for all of our class offerings are available on the website to assist you in making the appropriate selection (click here to go to Class Descriptions). Additionally, our staff can consult with you to help you find the best class for you. The following classes are considered appropriate for students who are brand new to yoga or who took yoga many years ago: Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, All Levels Yoga, Back Care Yoga, Restorative Yoga, or Level 1 Yoga.
With a Class card, what do i do if i miss a class?
You do not have to commit to a specific class and/or a specific day and you simply utilize your available class card sessions for any classes that fit your schedule within the 6-month time period associated with that class card. Additionally, every session of the Level 1 Yoga, Chair Yoga, Gentle Yoga, All Levels, Restorative Yoga, and Back Care classes is appropriate for any level student to attend. Class cards may not be used for workshops/special events and are not transferable to other students or accepted for guest drop-in payments. Missed classes cannot be carried over into future class cards; refunds will not be issued for missed classes. All class cards purchased expire on the expiration date.
Refunds are limited to health or personal emergencies minus a $20 processing fee. Refunds are calculated from the date you notify Sunrise Yoga Studio in writing of your withdrawal and will only be considered while your class card is active. The refund amount is not calculated based on the number of classes attended. Refunds are given by check and may take up to two weeks.
How many classes should I take per week?
Yoga is like many other things in life – the more you do it, the more you get back from it. Even on the days you can’t attend a class, we encourage you to practice at home. Audio CDs are available for purchase through the studio to assist you with your practice away from the studio.
Can i attend a class if I am late?
To give yourself the best possible experience, it is best to arrive a few minutes before the start of class. We do understand, however, that things in life occasionally hold you up. For your safety, you may come to class if you are less than 10 minutes late. The Sunrise Yoga staff will let you know when you may enter the classroom. If we do not have someone at the front desk, we will lock the door at the start of class.
I want my child to be involved in yoga. can they attend any class?
We offer classes just for kids and for families as special events. Unless specified, all other classes are for adults and teenagers over 15. For kids ages 12-15, please contact us: we will be happy to talk about your child’s situation and maturity.
How do I know if a class has been canceled do to inclement weather?
Check our website, our phone app and our Facebook Fan Page. Or you may call the studio to listen for an updated message. We will make the decision about holding a class at least 2 hours prior to the start time of class. Classes cancelled due to inclement weather may be made up during your class card period.
Pregnant students are welcome to attend our Level 1 Yoga, Gentle Yoga, Chair Yoga, All Levels, and Back Care classes. All our teachers are well trained to work with pregnant students. All of our teachers are trained in working with various student concerns. For all health issues, please speak with your physician before your first class to receive his/her approval. We are able to work with many types of students, and some of our classes are specially designed for students with limitations and concerns. Please notify your instructor prior to class about your concerns. You may also consider a private yoga session prior to attending your first class.
