Anxiety and Insomnia Disorders are prevalent in our culture now. War, recession, and a materialistic society are some of the factors that can contribute to the stress that is felt by so many people. Continuous stress can, in turn, lead to biochemical imbalances that distort how an individual interprets the world. Yoga training that includes movement plus conscious breathing and resting the body/mind can calm the rajas (nervous energy) that accompany these conditions.
Yoga Techniques Workshop (12:00 - 2:15 pm)
When anxious there are posture sequences that can have either soothing or agitating effects. In this class students will be guided through postures and breathing exercises that can ease the nervous tension that is felt by those who suffer from anxiety, insomnia, panic disorders, and anxiety-driven depression. In addition to the above, we will explore a straightforward and effective method of meditation that can help us to identify the repetitive mental patterns responsible for reinforcing our fears and insecurities.
Teacher training Session for Anxiety Relief (2:45 - 4:00 pm)
This discussion is only open to certified and/or registered yoga teachers who have taken the earlier workshop. We will discuss how to develop our professional skills and how to provide compassionate support for our students with this topic in mind.
Guest instructor: Suzanne Newton attended her first yoga classes in 1972 with the desire to learn how to relax. One of her primary teachers is Patricia Walden, with whom she studied for 13 years while living in RI. Ms. Walden has a special interest in the practice of the 8 Limbs of Yoga for emotional health.
