Cultivate calm. Still the body. Quiet the mind. -- Yoga & Mindfulness Meditation workshop

No previous experience is necessary.

This class can be an introduction to mindfulness meditation for people who are new to meditation or an opportunity to enhance the knowledge you already have if you are an experienced meditator.

You will learn a variety of yoga poses to increase strength and flexibility in your hips, hamstrings, and back to enhance stability and suppleness in sitting postures, including sitting in a chair. You do not have to be able to sit on the floor!

In addition, you will learn mindfulness practices that will develop your ability to focus your attention, which gives you more choice in how you respond to the events and stresses of daily life.

Taught by Cindy Dollar & Susan Grant.

Cindy Dollar has been helping people live more flexible and balanced lives through yoga since 1985. A certified Junior Intermediate Iyengar Yoga Instructor, she was voted "Best Yoga Teacher in Western North Carolina" for three consecutive years. She is the co-author of Yoga Your Way and owner of One Center Yoga in Asheville.

Susan Grant, MA, LPA, is a psychologist in private practice in Asheville, where she specializes in mindfulness-based cognitive therapy. Hoopdio class

Hula hooping has been a popular activity for over 50 years, and now adults are discovering a reincarnation of the hoop and seeing it in a whole new way.

Hooping for fitness with larger, heavier "modern" size hoops is a unique and fun way to burn calories. In this workshop you will enjoy playful exercise, while still getting an intense core and full body workout. We will also focus on strength training with stretches and poses that are complimentary to yoga.

Local fitness instructor Monica Casey is very enthusiastic about bringing hoops back to the masses with her Winston Salem based company Monkey Hooper. Not only does she make and design weighted hoops, but she also teaches classes for adults and children throughout the Triad. "Hooping appeals to those who are looking for a little change in their workout routines," Monica says. "It is the perfect way to exercise, de-stress, and reenergize. It can be modified for any fitness level, done indoors or out, and always leaves a smile on your face."

Hoops will be supplied for your workout and also available for purchase.

Weekend workshop with Cindy Dollar

Details to come soon. Friday - Sunday, November 5-7.

108 Sun Salutations

The next one will be held on December 19 @ 3:30 - 6 pm.

Celebrate the Summer and Winter Solstices. We do this every June and December on a Sunday near the solstice. Led by Larry Schonhofen. Participation is free, but we ask participants to bring money to donate to the Clemmons Food Pantry. Visit the 108 web page to view photos and money raised from prior years. We've raised over $6600.

Now, you're probably thinking "No way, no how - 108 sun salutations! I couldn't possibly do that many." Well, if you've taken Level 1 classes for at least six months, you're already well on the way.

Remember, you don't have to do 108 sun salutations - many folks do fewer, even just ten or fifteen. What's important is simply doing what you can - in good form, with confidence.

Matter of fact, Fran Gordon's participated in seven of our celebrations - and says she's never actually done the full 108 sun salutations. "I was intimidated at first, but I'm so glad I came. If all I do is one sun salutation, then that's all I do. Once you've done it - whether you do one, twenty or 108 (which I've never done) - you won't want to miss it again. I even came one year with a sprained ankle and it was still fulfilling."

Here's a preparation schedule to help you get ready (it's got one schedule for those want to aim for the full 108, and a different plan if you want to shoot for a lower number).

But as Christy Hamrick says, your normal daily yoga practice is a perfectly good way to prepare too. She originally planned to practice the Sun Salutation every day, but ended up mostly following her usual routine chest openers to offset sitting in cars and at desks, then down dog, mountain, warrior, sage twist, and a hip opener. She ended up doing the full sequence of 108 salutations, along with a friend who was pretty new to yoga.
